Hillary Clinton was questioned by the FBI Saturday morning in a 3-1/2-hour meeting. Seems like an awfully long time just to tell them none of the classified documents she handled were MARKED “classified” (except the ones that were), so it’s time to move on, and besides, at this point, with all our secrets already in the hands of hackers worldwide, “what difference does it make?”<br />

Naturally, her camp has a different spin. In an unintentionally hilarious statement, campaign spokesman Nick Merrill wrote that Hillary “gave a voluntary interview this morning about her email arrangements while she was Secretary…She is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion.“<br />
<br />
So pleased, she could hurl a lamp, I’d wager. By the way, it's not a "review," it's a federal investigation. That adjective "voluntary" is also debatable. But I digress.<br />
<br />
Merrill concluded, “Out of respect for the investigative process, she will not comment further on her interview." And if anyone has respect for the “investigative process,” it’s Hillary “Vast Right-wing Conspiracy” Clinton.<br />
<br />
One thing worth noting: unless it’s the type of investigation where they break down your door with a battering ram, the FBI doesn’t just drop by unannounced for tea on a Saturday morning. A 3-1/2-hour interview with a presumptive Presidential nominee would have to be scheduled well in advance.<br />
<br />
That means this was probably at least in the works when Hillary was claiming she hadn’t heard from the FBI at all, and almost certainly set in stone on her agenda when Bill Clinton just “happened” to find his way onto Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s plane for a half-hour private chat ("No photos!") just a few days ago. But then, the Clintons always have had a unique way of showing their respect for the investigative process.<br />

Apple’s smartwatch is different from all of these watches since it is rectangular. Apple’s move seemed like a forced attempt to change the way people wear watches, to show that carrying a square watch on your wrist can be just as classy. Unfortunately, consumers always preferred round watches (and smartwatches). According to an editor of Retail Jeweller, nearly 80% of ordinary watch sales are round faced devices. For the vast majority of people, a rounded watch feels more nostalgic, but more importantly, more stylish than a rectangular watch.<br />
<br />
However, Apple’s rectangular-shaped smartwatches was not that of a bad idea if we take into account some of the disadvantages of the rounded design. The screen manufacturing is significantly more costly with circular devices. But the biggest issue remains app design. For example, it would be hard to find a convenient way to fit a text message or notification on a circular device. One of the main complaints with smartwatches is that they do not allow users to input text on their devices.<br />
<br />
One possibly explanation why square smartwatches are not as appreciated by consumers, is that people do not want to carry computers on their wrists, but rather, well, watches.<br />
<br />
It is not the first Apple shifted the design of one of their product lines. For instance, the iPod Nano. The iPod Nano was released in 2007, and it was one of Apple’s attempts to return to the original iPod Classic, before the company decided they want to return to the candy bar format again.<br />
<br />
The company is possibly attempting a similar move with the new Apple smartwatch. By releasing both the square and rounded devices, Apple will have a market advantage over Android smartwatches.<br />
<br />
Tim Cook said that the Apple Watch is possibly the most personal device the company created so far. “It’s ot just on you, it’s with you,” said Cook. What Apple has to understand now is that in order to sell such a product it cannot just impose their design on the market. Apple learned from their mistake and is currently giving consumers the choice to buy a rounded smartwach.<br />
<br />
Rumors say that Apple will stick to circular wearables and that a third generation of smartwatches might roll out by the end of 2017.

Google already announced that it would host a media event next week, on September 29, when we're all expecting the company to unveil two new Nexus smartphones (the LG-made Nexus 5X, and the Huawei-made Nexus 6P).<br />

But will Android 6.0 Marshmallow for older handsets be launched on that day, too? Well, we can't know for sure, but, according to Bell - one of Canada's largest mobile carriers - the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 could be updated to the new version of Android on October 5. However, this date is subject to change.<br />

Needless to say, the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 should be the world's first handsets to get the Marshmallow update (Nexus smartphones are always the first to be updated). Of course, the October 5 date might be valid just for Canada, and we may see the Nexus 5 and 6 getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow sooner in the US. In any case, we should definitely expect updates to be rolled out not long after September 29. <br />

Currently available only as a Developer Preview, Android 6.0 Marshmallow comes with plenty of novelties and improvements over Android Lollipop, including Android Pay, enhanced Google Now, standardized fingerprint support, a new power saving mode dubbed "doze", and so on.<br />

Engadget has published a sizable review of Ubuntu Phone, and it’s worth reading in its entirety if you’re interested in an alternative operating system. The good news is that Ubuntu has nailed some interesting features on the device — the settings menu is well-crafted, the browser is nimble, and certain multitasking panels and multi-app display modes are well done. The company has created a set of content and service capabilities it calls “Scopes.” Scopes allow you to pick custom information feeds to scroll through and attempt to guess what content you want to see based on how you tell the phone you’re feeling. Tell it “I’m stressed,” and the phone will attempt to show results that might be pertinent.<br />

Unfortunately, when it comes to many basic tasks and fundamental functions, Ubuntu Phone still falls short. According to the reviewer, the phone often freezes for significant periods of time, which Engadget believes is caused by the background updates to Scopes. The quad-core Cortex-A7 should be up to the task of handling the job, but it doesn’t seem to be. There are also significant issues regarding Ubuntu Phone’s touch sensitivity, its total lack of applications and reliance on web apps to make up the difference, and the operating system’s limited features and capabilities.<br />
<br />
As Nick Summers, the reviewer, puts it: “Aside from the app void and the questionable value of Scopes, Ubuntu Phone is a bit of a nightmare to use the majority of the time… The gesture-based navigation is unrefined; there are bugs and glitches all over the place; and in general, many core experiences are severely lacking in polish. Despite years of development, Ubuntu Phone still feels like an early beta.”<br />

I have deliberately skimmed the high points of the review, because it’s worth a read in full, but based on Summer’s reporting, I’d have to agree. In fact, I’d go one further and say I’m not certain there’s an actual market for Ubuntu Phone at all. Originally the OS was supposed to ship on ultra-low-cost devices, but with Android smartphones now dipping entry prices well below $100 in developing markets, I’m not sure there’s any need.<br />
<br />
Obviously that won’t stop Ubuntu from investing in its project, but I can’t help wondering if Ubuntu Phone is Ubuntu’s Tizen — an underdeveloped platform with essentially no native applications and very limited prospects going forward. Samsung, at least, can guarantee that Tizen ships on devices by opting to use it on its own hardware. Ubuntu doesn’t have that option.

IVF technique increases pregnancy rates by 20%, study shows

It may not sound pleasant, but a procedure known as endometrial scratching has been shown to improve both pregnancy and birth rates when it is performed once in women who are undergoing reproductive treatment.<br />
<br />
Endometrial scratching is medically assisted damage to the womb, specifically the inner lining, and researchers say it was first successfully demonstrated to be beneficial in 2003.<br />
<br />
The procedure is intrusive, however, and the results of its effectiveness have not been fully documented.<br />
<br />
But a team of Brazilian scientists, in collaboration with Dr. Nick Raine-Fenning, of the Nottingham University Research and Treatment Unit (NURTURE), have demonstrated a benefit to the specific timing of endometrial scratching in a clinical trial.<br />
<br />
Results of the trial were published in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology.<br />

Scratching yielded more live births<br />

In the trial, Dr. Raine-Fenning and his colleagues sought to investigate the effect of endometrial scratching within a certain time frame - 7-14 days before core reproductive treatment began.<br />
<br />
There were a total of 158 women who took part in the trial, and all of them had previously received unsuccessful reproductive treatment. They were all taking an oral contraceptive pill (OCP) just before the trial treatment commenced.<br />
<br />
On the importance of having women on an OCP beforehand, Dr. Raine-Fenning told Medical News Today:<br />
<br />
"Many units use the 'pill' to control cycles and provide a degree of 'down regulation' prior to IVF. It gives them control of when treatment will happen and some believe it can improve outcome, although this is far from clear and of great debate."<br />
<br />
The researchers say that 77 of the women were randomized to receive the scratching technique, and it was indeed given 7-14 days before any reproductive treatment began.<br />
<br />
Of the 77 women who received the scratching technique, 39 became pregnant and 33 cases resulted in live births. This is in comparison with 23 live births from the control group.<br />
<br />
The difference represents a 20% increased clinical pregnancy rate in women who underwent endometrial scratching.<br />
<br />
The study also shows that the technique did not affect miscarriage or multiple pregnancy rates, compared with the standard protocols.<br />
<br />
Hope, but in the future<br />
<br />
The researchers note that up to 15% of women who are of reproductive age have trouble conceiving, and reproductive treatment failure can cause psychological distress for many couples, which is why the prospect of better chances may provide hope.<br />
<br />
Dr. Raine-Fenning explains:<br />
<br />
"This is the first well-designed trial conducted into endometrial scratching and the results are promising. Other trials have provided anecdotal evidence, but these have been limited and many questioned the validity of the technique."<br />
<br />
He says that he and his team are now conducting a follow-up study in Nottingham to create further guidance on endometrial scratching. "Early results are encouraging," he says.<br />
<br />
Though the scratching technique does increase the chances of live birth and clinical pregnancy, the researchers do caution that it might cause considerable pain.<br />
<br />
When asked how long until this procedure may become widely available to patients, Dr. Raine-Fenning told Medical News Today that there are still a number of clinical trials and repeated work that needs to be done before it would become common practice.<br />
<br />
However, he added:<br />
<br />
"For privately funded patients [in the UK], many clinics are offering this already, including ourselves, although reluctantly as we want to do the trial and do not feel there is enough evidence yet to warrant charging patients."<br />
<br />
He did say, however, that "it is hard to refuse someone who may be facing their last chance, especially if this takes 5 years to become mainstream."

Sleeping in regularly may not be a good idea if you want to keep your brain sharp, according to a new study that found people in their 60s and 70s who slept on average 9 hours or more in a 24-hour period showed a more rapid decline in cognitive function over 3 years than counterparts who slept 6-8 hours.<br />
<br />
Decline in cognitive function, such as memory and thinking, is a feature of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a known risk factor for dementia.<br />
<br />
The study, which was conducted by researchers from the University Hospital Madrid and Columbia University in New York, was published online recently in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.<br />
<br />
The researchers, led by Dr. Julián Benito-León, looked at data from a large cohort of over 2,700 people in their 60s and 70s who were followed for 3 years.<br />
<br />
At the beginning and end of the study period, the participants underwent assessment of brain function using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), one of a battery of tests used to assess dementia.<br />
<br />
Over the 3 years they were followed, the participants also filled in reports that included details of their sleeping patterns.<br />

The results showed that 49% of participants were normal sleepers (they slept on average 6-8 hours over a 24-hour period, this was the "reference group"), 40% were long sleepers (9 or more hours) and 11% were short sleepers (5 hours or less).<br />
<br />
Over the follow-up, the MMSE scores declined in all three groups, with long sleepers showing nearly double the amount of decline in cognitive function of normal sleepers.<br />
<br />
The authors note that the "difference between long sleepers and the reference group was significant," and the result remained "robust," even when they took into account factors that might influence it, such as age, education, and smoking and drinking habits.<br />
<br />
The researchers say further studies are needed to confirm these findings.<br />
<br />
It is important to note finding a link does not establish that longer sleep actually causes the mental decline. There could be other explanations, and one question that could be explored is does mental decline cause people to sleep longer?<br />
<br />
Another study published recently found that too much or too little sleep is linked to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity and anxiety in those aged 45 and over.

With their promise of improved mental abilities, it is easy to see why brain training games are so popular. But new research shows that the perceived benefits may be limited to memory instead of IQ.<br />
<br />
Most people would love a boost in brain power. And marketing departments are quick to tap into these desires. But an advertisement promising to improve your intelligence may be too alluring to resist, and probably too good to be true.<br />
<br />
Psychological scientist Randall Engle of the Georgia Institute of Technology explains:<br />
<br />
"It is hard to spend any time on the web and not see an ad for a website that promises to train your brain, fix your attention, and increase your IQ. These claims are particularly attractive to parents of children who are struggling in school."<br />
<br />
Prof. Engle believes the claims are based on evidence that shows a strong correlation between working memory capacity (WMC) and general fluid intelligence.<br />
<br />
Working memory capacity - or short-term memory - refers to our ability to keep information either in mind or quickly retrievable, particularly in the presence of distraction. General fluid intelligence is the ability to infer relationships, do complex reasoning, and solve problems.<br />
<br />
The link between WMC and fluid intelligence seems to suggest that increasing WMC should increase fluid intelligence, but, as Prof. Engle notes: "this assumes that the two constructs are the same thing, or that WMC is the basis for fluid intelligence."<br />
<br />
No boost to intelligence<br />

To test the theory, the team at Georgia Tech invited 55 undergraduate students to complete 20 days of training on certain cognitive tasks. To ensure the students remained motivated and engaged in their training, they were paid extra for improving their performance each day.<br />
<br />
Students in the two experimental conditions trained on either complex span tasks, which have been consistently shown to be good measures of WMC, or simple span tasks.<br />
<br />
With the simple span tasks, the students were asked to recall items in the order they were presented, while for complex span tasks, the students had to remember items while performing another task in between item presentations. A control group trained on a visual search task which, like the other tasks, became progressively harder each day.<br />
<br />
The researchers administered a battery of tests before and after training to gauge improvement and transfer of learning, including a variety of WMC measures and the measures of fluid intelligence.<br />
<br />
The results were clear: only students who trained on complex span tasks showed transfer to other WMC tasks. None of the groups showed any training benefit on measures of fluid intelligence.<br />
<br />
Tyler Harrison, a Georgia Tech graduate student and lead author on the paper, says:<br />
<br />
"For more than 100 years, psychologists have argued that general memory ability cannot be improved, that there is little or no generalization of 'trained' tasks to 'untrained' tasks. So we were surprised to see evidence that new and untrained measures of working memory capacity may be improved with training on complex span tasks."<br />
<br />
The main benefit seems to be that this could have important implications for real-world multitasking.<br />
<br />
But the benefits of training did not transfer to fluid intelligence. Prof. Engle points out that just because WMC and fluid intelligence are linked, it does not mean that they are the same.<br />
<br />
As he sensibly points out:<br />
<br />
"Height and weight in human beings are also strongly correlated, but few reasonable people would assume that height and weight are the same variable. If they were, gaining weight would make you taller and losing weight would make you shorter - those of us who gain and lose weight periodically can attest to the fact that that is not true."<br />
<br />
Earlier studies, reported on Medical News Today, have linked intelligence to the ability to block out destractions, while another showed that keeping active mentally could preserve memory.<br />
<br />
The researchers acknowledge that more work needs to be done. They plan to continue this research to see how training specific aspects of cognition can lead to positive transfer to other tasks, both in the laboratory and in the real world.

Every year thousands of foreigners living in France decide, for a variety of reasons, to become français, but the journey is not always easy. The Local speaks to three Anglos who can now officially call themselves French, to find out why they did it and whether it was all worth it.<br />

In 2012, 46,000 applications for French citizenship were accepted by authorities and earlier this year the country’s interior minister said he wants that number to top 100,000 in the future.<br />
<br />
Many of those who opt to obtain French nationality are Anglo expats, who for a variety of reasons, some perhaps more practical than others, decide it would be a good idea to become French.<br />
<br />
But the journey, which can be somewhat of an emotional roller coaster, is not always easy and many end up entangled in red tape.<br />
<br />
Here we speak to three Anglo expats in France who tell us why they gained French citizenship and whether it was worth it.<br />

“The main reason why I became French was to get through the passport checks at the airport quicker. I was travelling a lot at the time and it was becoming such a pain to have to get in the line with 200 to 300 people with one guy checking passports.<br />

"Meanwhile in the EU queue there are three or four people checking passports and everyone is whizzing through. I just thought, when the time comes that I can get a French passport, I'll get one. If French people ask me why I became French, I have no qualms about telling them it was to avoid the passport queues at airports.<br />
<br />
'There was no champagne or nibbles. Unbelievable'<br />
<br />
"I started putting my dossier together in May 2011. That took a long time because I had to request original documents from Australia and then have them translated into French. I couldn’t do that myself, I had to pay for an official translator. It was expensive. Something like €50 a page.<br />
<br />
"In September 2011, I then had my "Entretien d’assimilation", which I went to with my husband. It was run by a young woman who looked a bit embarrassed to be asking me questions. I was expecting all these questions on French history, so I had done loads of revision and learned all the important dates, but it was all a waste of time.<br />
<br />
"In the end she just asked if I had French friends, if I spoke English with my husband and how I contributed to local life and the community.<br />
<br />
“I think I finally got the news I had been accepted in mid 2012 when I was sent a letter telling me I had to attend the ceremony. We all had to stand there and sing the national anthem and then we were presented with a certificate.<br />
<br />
"The one disappointing thing about the whole day was that there was no champagne or nibbles. I thought, 'This is France. Of all days, today is a day where they should have champagne.' I nearly gave my passport back.<br />
<br />
'There are things I'll never come to grips with'<br />
<br />
"I came here without speaking the language and I learned it on my own. I have French friends and I am the kind of expat who doesn't just hang around with other Anglos. A country like France, where the food is that good, you just have to embrace it. There are things I’ll never come to grips with, but I have integrated.<br />
<br />
“I feel a mix of Australian and French and even British, because I lived in the UK for a while. It really depends on who I'm with. It changes all the time. My French friends and family were really happy for me. They often tell me I'm more French than some French people.<br />
<br />
“I feel like I have given a lot to this country. I work here. I pay my taxes. I think I have embraced the French way of life. It’s nice to have something official. And in terms of the passport queues, I am getting through much quicker these days.<br />

"We were living in the Languedoc region and were having a lot of problems trying to get the Carte de Séjour renewed every year. We had to get visas, then Cartes de Sejour, and having to reapply meant the paperwork was endless and the fonctionnaires were pretty inept as well.<br />

"When we found out that after five years we could apply for nationality and could avoid all the hassle of renewing cartes de séjour, it seemed like a very attractive idea<br />
<br />
"When I first got the list of paperwork that we needed to get together, I looked at it and thought, 'no way.' We needed both of our parents birth certificates translated into French. Then they had to be sent back to the US to get a stamp on the piece of paper to basically say it was all formal.<br />
<br />
"We were dealing with five different states back home in the US and I just thought, 'we are never going to be able to do this.'<br />
<br />
“Anyway, we managed to get it together and around six months later, the police showed up at the house. We had the interview. They were very nice and just wanted to know why I wanted to be French and whether I had integrated. But then we forgot about it and later on the piece of paper came through the post.<br />
<br />
"It’s definitely worth it. I'm really glad I did it. I felt like we had already integrated. But having French nationality definitely generated a lot more respect from my neighbours.<br />
<br />
"It was like we were welcomed to the club. People invited us over to celebrate. The French are very proud of their country and they definitely appreciated it."<br />

"When we left Britain, we sold everything to move here and had no intention of ever returning to the UK, and we still don’t. Being British, we didn’t need to become French in order to live or work here, but we set up our own business in France and our life was here, so we wanted to become French.<br />

"The whole process took about four years. We thought the local prefecture had just put our form in a drawer and forgotten about us. We had pretty much given up hope.<br />

"But then the letter came through out of the blue. It was quite a thrill when it happened. We were delighted.<br />

"The process isn't smooth. They said they wanted our parents’ marriage certificate and then they made a mistake in the translation, which basically made me appear illegitimate.  It was a lot of paperwork and a lot of waiting.<br />

'Our sense of humour is not just going to change with a French passport'<br />

"Having French nationality does not stop us being British. We still have British nationality, so we didn’t have to give that up. I suppose that makes it an easier decision. I feel French up to a point.<br />
<br />
"We live in a small village so our neighbours and clients are French but obviously we still have an attachment to Britain through friends and family and we have a British cultural background.<br />
<br />
"There are still things that are not French about us, like our sense of humour. That’s not going to change just because we have a French passport.<br />
<br />
"Our neighbours were quite impressed that we went to all the trouble. When people ask us where we are from we say 'France.' They look bemused and then we have to explain it.<br />
<br />
"It's the same when British people ask us. I have never met another Brit who has done the same thing as us.<br />
<br />
"In practice it hasn’t changed much apart from the fact we can vote in national elections. After you're here for a certain period of time you can't vote in Britain and I didn’t want to vote in a country where I don’t live anyway. It’s nice now to feel as though you can have an impact."

French Assembly halted over sexist clucking

There was uproar in the French parliament this week when a deputy made sexist clucking noises during a speech by a female Green Party MP. France's government spokeswoman said deputies cannot control their behaviour after downing too much booze at dinner.<br />

Female Socialist MPs in the French parliament staged a walk-out on Wednesday in a protest against sexism. Their boycott of the opening ofparliament came a day after a 'tipsy' UMP deputy provoked uproar when he made sexist chicken noises at a female MP as she made a speech, causing the parliamentary debate to be suspended.<br />
<br />
On Tuesday, as the new pensions bill was being discussed in the lower house, Veronique Massoneau was abused by a deputy from the UMP ranks as she presented her amendment.<br />
<br />
The deputy, who has not been named, blatantly tried to ruffle Massoneau's feathers when he began making clucking noises, which in turn provoked a furious response from his victim.<br />
<br />
“Stop! That’s enough! I am not a chicken,” Massoneau blurted out in anger. The incident was widely denounced as sexist in a country where the word chicken ('poule') is often used as a derogatory term for women.<br />
<br />
The leader of the National Assembly Claude Bartelone was furious and denounced the “incredible behaviour”.<br />
<br />
But the clucking noises continued throughout Massoneau’s speech, forcing Bartelone to suspend the session.<br />
<br />

This is not the first time French MPs have failed to cover themselves in glory during a parliamentary debate.<br />
<br />
Last year Housing Minister Cécile Duflot was wolf-whistled when she stood up to speak wearing a floral dress.<br />
<br />
“We were just admiring her,” UMP deputy Patrick Balkany told French daily Le Figaro at the time. “If she didn’t want us to take an interest in her, then she shouldn’t have changed her look.”<br />
<br />
Following the clucking incident, France's government spokeswoman complained on Wednesday of lawmakers partaking in too many "boozy dinners".<br />

"It is regrettable that some people have difficulty maintaining an attitude that is consistent with their functions after obviously boozy dinners," government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said after a cabinet session.<br />

Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti also denounced the incident as "deplorable".<br />
<br />
"Unfortunately we've seen this before," she said. "It shows that we have to continue to fight to have women politicians respected."<br />
<br />
Bartelone has not named the clucking UMP deputy and a video of the debate broadcast by the National Aseembly website failed to identify the chicken imitator.<br />
<br />
However co-Chair of the French Greens group François de Rugy pointed the finger in a tweet at UMP deputy Philippe Le Ray.<br />

Speaking to the Nouvel Observateur news site on Wednesday Massoneau hit out a culture of sexism among French MPs.<br />
<br />
“This shows the difficulty a man has to live with equality,” she said referring to Le Ray, who Massoneau said has since apologised.<br />
<br />
“I do not want to generalise, I work very well with a lot of men but it is always women who are on the end of this type of disrespect. For some of them it is spontaneous. It’s serious because they don’t even realise,” Massoneau added.<br />
<br />
“He continued even after being told to stop. Being tipsy is not an excuse. It just shows the deep rooted sexist attitudes in them,” she added.

The battle between electronic cigarettes and the conventional tobacco kind is becoming increasingly bitter in France as one tobacconist sets a precedent by becoming the first in the country to take legal action against a nearby e-cigarette store over advertising.<br />

Annie Pontus, who runs a tobacco shop in Plaisance-du-Touch, near Toulouse, is up in arms over the e-cigarette store “Esmokeclean,” located just 100m from her shop, which she says isn't competing on a level playing field.<br />

Explaining why she has decided to take legal action against Esmokeclean she old Europe1 radio: “It’s the advertising that bothers us.”<br />
<br />
“On their window it says ‘smoke another way’, and things like that. We don’t have the right to advertise but these people, who sell nicotine-based products, do," she added.<br />
<br />
According to Pontus and her lawyer, e-cigarettes and their liquids contain nicotine, so should therefore be placed in the same bracket as tobacco products. She also believes the government should regulate their sale and make it law that tobacconists have the exclusive right to sell the devices.<br />
<br />
“If these shops have all their rights, including that of advertising, I don’t see why newsagents don’t also have those rights,” she said.<br />
<br />
Pontus is the first tobacconist in France to manage to take this kind of case to court.<br />
<br />
The tobacconist's legal action comes after the European Parliament ruled on Tuesday that e-cigarettes were not in fact medicinal and could therefore remain on open sale. <br />
<br />
If the bill gets approved by the 28 member states then both private stores and tobacconists will continue to have the right to sell the hugely popular electronic cigarettes. The EU bill also seeks to outlaw all advertising of e-cigarettes in an attemt to discourage all forms of smoking.<br />
<br />
Reynald Pirat, one of the owners of Esmokeclean, seemed to suggest he thought the case was a lot of hot air, calling it a “tall tale.” “They are the addiction and we are the cure, it’s ironic really” he said.<br />
<br />
Pirat, who owns another e-cigarette shop in Colomiers in the Haute-Garonne region, and his lawyer Benjamin Echalier, deny that e-cigarettes should be classed as a tobacco product.<br />
<br />
The case will come before a judge on the 17th October, when Pontus hopes to see Esmokeclean court ordered to stop advertising their wares.

From Monday through Wednesday, Ocean Spray, the cranberry juice cocktail maker, has taken over the front lawn of the train station and created a makeshift cranberry bog, complete with 2,000 fresh berries and overall-clad cranberry farmers.<br />

In reality, Moore explained, cranberries are short shrubs and are harvested by flooding when they are to be used in juices or sauces. Otherwise, cranberries are picked just like their berry brethren. Cranberries are only grown in a handful of states, the closest being New Jersey and Massachusetts. "It's important because there's no cranberry operations down here, so we'll bring it to them because they don't understand it," Moore said.

Syria: Two more French journalists held hostage

France confirmed on Wednesday that French journalists Nicolas Henin and Pierre Torres have been held hostage in Syria since June. The news came as two other French journalists entered their 127th day of captivity in the conflict-torn country.<br />

The foreign ministry said in a statement that Nicolas Henin, 37, and Pierre Torres, 29, had been captured on June 22nd, but did not provide any further details.<br />
<br />
Their abduction was not initially made public at the request of their families, who said in a statement they had hoped a media blackout might help secure a quick release of the two men.<br />
<br />
"But after more than 100 days of waiting, the families and friends of the two journalists wanted to address a message to Nicolas and Pierre to tell them they are doing everything they can to secure their rapid release," a statement from the families said.<br />
<br />
However, French Prime Minister François Ayrault appears to have jumped the gun on Wednesday morning, naming Henin and Torres during an interview on Europe 1 radio, which friends of Henin told news website Rue 89 was a gaffe on the part of the PM.<br />
<br />
The journalists' families had intended to go public about the kidnapping on Sunday, at the Rencontres de Bayeux, an annual prize-giving ceremony for war journalists, according to Rue 89.<br />
<br />
"I was astonished that Ayrault released the news before the moment envisaged by the families," said Eric de Lavarene, an executive at Solas Films, the TV production firm which employed Henin. "It was a bit of a gaffe, it shows a real lack of tact."<br />
<br />
The families of Henin and Torres said they would now be working with the families of the two other French journalists detained in Syria, Didier Francois and Edouard Elias.<br />
<br />
Francois, a seasoned war reporter for Europe 1 radio, and Elias, a photographer, were detained on June 6th by unknown men at a checkpoint while travelling to Syria's second city of Aleppo.<br />
<br />
'I am in Syria. Intermittent internet access'<br />
<br />
Henin and Torres disappeared while working in the town of Raqqa in northern Syria.<br />
<br />
Henin was employed by a television production company, Solas Films, and regularly did work for French television station Arte, weekly magazine Le Point, Belgium and Switzerland's national broadcasters and Radio Canada.<br />
<br />
The most recent message from his Twitter account occurred on June 11th, 11 days before his capture. Henin tells a fellow journalist "I am in Syria. Intermittent internet access."<br />
<br />
Torres had covered the 2011 Libyan conflict and was on his second trip to Syria. Among his clients were AFP.<br />
<br />
The families of Henin and Torres said they had been informed by the French authorities in August that the two men were still alive, and in his radio appearance on Wednesday morning, Ayrault claimed the French government had "proof they are alive."<br />
